Cooper Library Basics

New York Public Library

NYPL includes libraries in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Queens Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library are separate, but affiliated, systems, and have separate catalogs.

The intent of your instruction session and this guide is to help you become more efficient in searching for and retrieving information. During the class session, we will cover the following areas:

  • Formulating your search strategy
  • Tips and shortcuts for searching the catalog and other databases
  • Reading a bibliography and citation
  • Finding material once you have a citation

At the end of this session you should have a better understanding of how to tackle your research. If you encounter any difficulty along the way, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me or my colleagues in the Library.

    Consortium libraries

The Cooper Union Library belongs to the Research Library Association of South Manhattan, a consortium established with NYU and The New School in 1977. This Consortium shares a Catalog (BobCat) and provides students and faculty of member institutions with access to each other's collections.

Cooper Union students and faculty may borrow items at consortium libraries at NYU, The New School, and the New York School of Interior Design. For any restricted or licensed electronic resource, you must be on site at the other library, unless Cooper also has a license.

Before going to any of the other libraries, make sure that your library account is in good standing:  Log in to your account, stop by our Circulation Desk, or contact us for more information.

For HSS4, these Consortium libraries would be particularly useful:
